Amazing headline highlights ridiculous success of Boston's sports teams

Boston sports fans are spoiled — really spoiled. It's OK to admit it.

Just think of Jason McKeon, otherwise known as "Sign Kid." Every time a Boston team rolls through the city on duck boats, celebrating another championship, there he is. In February, his latest sign had these words: 17 years old, 12 parades.

But before this ludicrous run of success, things were very, very different in Boston. That point was driven home by Darren Rovell on Twitter Thursday morning.

That's right: a "Welcome to Loserville" headline appeared exactly 19 years ago.

The cartoon image featured caricatures of Rick Pitino, Jimy Williams, and Mike Keenan — none of whom covered themselves in glory during their Boston careers — and some other guy named Bill Belichick, who's thinking "I should have stayed with the Jets."

It's a good thing he didn't, as the Patriots have won six Super Bowls since 2000 (and lost in the title game three other times).

The Red Sox are a perfect 4-0 in World Series appearances, ending an 86-year drought in 2004. The Bruins also captured a long-awaited title, winning their first Stanley Cup in 39 years in 2011 while coming up short of the Cup in two other trips to the Final. And the Celtics are 1-1 in trips to the NBA Finals and have made it to the Eastern Conference Finals four other times since then.

That's a total of 12 championships, 18 trips to the championship round, and 28 appearances in a conference championship round. Add in the Revs' two trips to the MLS Eastern Conference Final, and that's a combined 30 appearances in the Final Four.

Not bad for a place once dubbed "Loserville."
