Fantasy Football Week 4 starts, sits: Smartest plays at each position

Share

We're still early in the 2019 fantasy football season, but for owners struggling in their leagues, there's little margin for error remaining.

Choosing who to start and sit, especially in your flex spots, is vitally important. Luckily for you, we've got a breakdown of some key decisions entering Week 4.

Let's take a look at our top fantasy starts and sits for the week.

START

Philip Rivers, QB, Los Angeles Chargers: Rivers should destroy a horrendous Dolphins defense that's allowed a league-high 10 touchdown passes, as well as an average of 291.3 pass yards per game. Opposing quarterbacks also are completing 72.1 percent of their passes against this Miami defense. The Chargers are 1-2 and desperate for a win, so betting on a huge game from Rivers against the worst team in the league is a smart play.

Marlon Mack, RB, Indianapolis Colts: Mack is averaging 20 carries per game, and he should pick up plenty of yards against a weak Raiders defense allowing 4.1 yards per carry and a total of three rushing touchdowns this season. The third-year running back is averaging 99 yards rushing per game, and he's also found the end zone twice. Mack is a must-start each week.

James Conner, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers: Conner has been a huge disappointment with 97 yards and one touchdown over his first three games. Sunday's matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals could be what he needs to get on track. Cincy's run defense is allowing 4.9 yards per carry and 168.7 yards per game, in addition to four rushing touchdowns over three games.

Sterling Shepard, WR, New York Giants: The Giants turning to rookie Daniel Jones at quarterback makes Shepard fantasy relevant again. Shepard tallied seven receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown on nine targets in Jones' debut last week, and we should expect the young QB to target his most talented wideout plenty more times against the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

Tyrell Williams, WR, Oakland Raiders: Williams is Raiders quarterback Derek Carr's No. 1 wide receiver, and he's caught one touchdown pass in all three of Oakland's games so far. He also has a decent matchup versus a Colts defense allowing the third-most passing touchdowns in the league.

SIT

Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills: The Patriots defense gives up the fewest passing yards per game (162.3) and leads the league in opposing quarterback completion percentage (52.8) and interceptions (six). New England also hasn't allowed a passing touchdown through three games. This is a horrendous matchup for Allen.

Frank Gore, RB, Buffalo Bills: Gore's matchup against the Patriots run defense is even worse. New England allows the fewest rushing yards per carry and per game, and it hasn't allowed a rushing touchdown all season.

Sony Michel, RB, New England Patriots: Michel has struggled to regain the impressive form he showed as a rookie. The University of Georgia product has rushed for just 108 yards and two touchdowns over three games. His most disappointing stat is a 2.4 yards per carry output. Michel picked up only 11 yards on nine carries in the Patriots' Week 3 win over the Jets. It's time to sit Michel until he starts being more productive. He's just not trustworthy from a fantasy perspective, especially with the Pats' offensive line dealing with multiple injuries.

Jarvis Landry, WR, Cleveland Browns: Landry is one of many disappointing fantasy stars on the Browns this season. He hasn't tallied more than four receptions in a game yet, and he still hasn't found the end zone. We wouldn't bet on that changing Sunday against a quality Baltimore Ravens defense.

John Brown, WR, Buffalo Bills: Brown is likely to be matched up against Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore, the best player in the league at his position. It's a terrible matchup for Brown versus one of the top three secondaries in football.
