Best and Worst: New England Patriots 27, New York Jets 13
It took the Patriots a while to get some separation on the Jets, but they finally were able to pull away in the second half for a 27-13 victory. Here's the best and worst of the Pats' eighth victory in 11 games this year.
On a second-and-15, Josh McCown dropped it over the middle to Isaiah Crowell who may have had a step on Donta Hightower but the Patriots middle linebacker got hold of Crowell by the dreads and his jersey and hauled him down.
RUN, RUN, RUN
The Patriots came out and showed an immediate commitment to running the ball with two Sony Michel runs and a James White run mixed in. They picked up the first down then got a 36-yard catch and run from Julian Edelman to put them in Jets territory.
On the Patriots’ second third down snap of the game, Tom Brady had Rob Gronkowski open at the sticks on a third-and-10 but didn’t see Gronk until after he’d come out of his break. Jamal Adams arrived when the ball did and forced an incompletion.
Elandon Roberts got turned inside out by running back Isaiah Crowell in the flat on the Jets second drive, fanning on a tackle and allowing Crowell to pick up 19 on a second-and-12.
On a third-and-7 from the Patriots 41 on the Jets second drive, the Patriots forced an incompletion but Deatrich Wise coming off the right side, dove and got Josh McCown’s legs after the ball was gone, resulting in a flag and a chance for the Jets drive to continue. They turned it into a touchdown.
WHAT’S A JONES TO DO
With the Patriots offering very little in the way of a pass rush, cornerback Jonathan Jones wound up having to cover a circuitous Jermaine Kearse crossing pattern for too long. He couldn’t. Kearse got a step and scored from 16 yards out to make it 7-0.
I HAVE AN IDEA, HEAR ME OUT
An offensive pass interference was called on James White for a very marginal pick on the Patriots second drive when White brushed a defender in coverage on Julian Edelman who was running down the right sideline on an out-and-up. It was a low percentage pass that fell incomplete and should have brought up a 41-yard field goal attempt on fourth-and-2. But the Jets accepted the penalty and backed the Patriots into a third-and-12 and Tom Brady hit Rob Gronkowski for a TD.
LOOKS FINE TO ME
Rob Gronkowski scored his first touchdown since the first game of the season, getting over safety Jamal Adams and inside corner Morris Claiborne for the touchdown off a perfectly-placed ball from Brady to make it 7-7. Gronkowski finished the first half with two catches for 49 yards
ARMED FOR REBUTTAL
On the Patriots third drive, Brady strung together a few on-point, high-velocity throws including one to Rob Gronkowski to open the drive then another to Josh Gordon after a hold that lasered down the middle through traffic. On the next drive, Brady ripped another one to Julian Edelman on the sidelines for a first down.
BROWN DRAWING YELLOW
Trent Brown had a marginal holding penalty wiping out a 25-yard Sony Michel run and had another first-half hold declined on a 13-yard James White run on third-and-3. On the latter flag, his penalty was declined while a chop block by David Andrews was enforced.
The Patriots had seven penalties for 75 yards in the first half. Uncommon level of outside-the-rules behavior.
OW, MY ARM!
Julian Edelman went high to haul in a Tom Brady pass in the second quarter and got spilled on his arm/elbow. It had him shaking his arm and clearly feeling some pain.
WHAT ARE THE ODDS
The Patriots were in the midst of a terrific drive nearing halftime, facing second-and-4 from the Jets 16 when Brady threw outside to Gronk, who was covered by Jamal Adams. Gronk had to reach in to break up the pass. On the next play, with an inside route on the left coming open, Brady locked in on Gronk again on a fade to the right and his pass wasn’t close. The Patriots settled for a field goal at the end of an 11-play drive.
Tom Brady had a thumb abrasion in the first half that needed some attention. He got “ointment.”
DAMNED IF YOU DO .. .
The Patriots – who are generally reluctant to blitz – sent extra rushers against Josh McCown late in the first half. The result? A 41-yard gain for Quincy Enunwa as McCown found him crossing the field inside Jason McCourty.
DELIGHTFUL IF YOU DON’T
On the very next play, the Patriots were FINALLY able to generate pressure with a four-man rush and forced a balloon from McCown which was picked off by Stephon Gilmore.
THAT BACK’S BACK
The Patriots came out of halftime tearing off yardage on the ground until, on a third-and-1 from the Jets 11, Sony Michel got bent mercilessly backwards after being stuffed and left with a back injury. Unnecessary.
After Michel went out, Cordarelle Patterson chugged forward for the first down.
AGAIN WITH THE OUTSIDE STUFF
After picking up the first down at the Jets 10, the Jets cluttered the middle of the field in tight, forcing Brady to throw outside twice to James White and once to Gronk. All were incomplete and a 14-play drive ended with another field goal.
DON’T FORGET JULES
After two chunk plays to open their drive – a 27-yard completion to Chris Hogan and a 27-yard run by White – the Jets lost track of Julian Edelman in the red zone and allowed him to score from 21-yard out on a simple pitch-catch-run.
THE BACK IS BACK
Michel came back from his injury early in the fourth quarter and immediately tore off a 33-yard run. And later, he'd score the touchdown that increased the Patriots' lead to 27-13.
