Bills QB Josh Allen explains how he used Tom Brady film to improve for 2019

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen took a smart approach this offseason to improving his skills entering the 2019 NFL campaign: study lots and lots of film on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Allen enjoyed an OK rookie season in 2018, throwing for 2,074 yards with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His strongest impact actually came on the ground, where he tallied 631 rushing yards and eight (!) touchdowns.

The ideal scenario for Allen this coming season is he improves as a passer. And what better way to do that than examine as much film on Brady as possible? Allen recently explained to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer what he observed from watching Brady.

“(Watching) the greatest quarterback to ever do it, how he changes certain things, on certain coverages what he thinks and where his eyes go, just picking up on little things. … He just knows the game so well, he understands situational football, he’s not going to force the ball into too many windows, he understands his checkdowns, he knows where his outlets are, he’s fine with taking 2-3 yards on a throw. … He trusts his offense and he trusts his receivers and running backs to go make plays for him. And that’s something that this year, we’ll be doing a better job of.”

The Bills struggled to a 6-10 record last season and failed to make the playoffs after they ended their long postseason drought with an AFC Wild Card Round appearance in 2017.

The AFC playoff race, outside of the Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, is wide open. Veteran quarterback Andrew Luck retiring from Indianapolis Colts should make it even easier for the rest of the conference to make the playoffs. The Bills have a shot to get in, and a 9-7 might even be enough to earn a playoff berth.

For the Bills to be in the hunt, Allen must take a step forward in his development and become a more efficient passer. Throwing more interceptions than touchdown passes and completing 52.8 percent of his passes isn't going to cut it. Watching the way Brady protects the football should really benefit Allen as he looks to make smarter decisions in his sophomore season.
