Isaiah Ford is the latest New England Patriots player to be given a nickname courtesy of Cam Newton.
Ford, a 24-year-old wide receiver, was acquired from the Miami Dolphins prior to the NFL trade deadline. On Thursday, Newton revealed Ford's new nickname and told a funny story about how it came to be.
"His nickname is 30 for 30," Newton said during his press conference Thursday. "You're probably asking yourself, 'Why 30 for 30?' So I asked him, I said 'Yo, Isaiah, do you have any nicknames?' He said 'Yeah, you can just call me Zay.' I said, 'Cool, cool. Well, if you don't know, my name's Cam and I'm the nicknamer around here pretty much, for what it's worth. So tell me a little about you. Do you have a hidden talent? Do you know how to play a musical instrument? Do you know how to sing? Do you know how to draw? Whatever.' He's like 'No, I know how to hoop. ... Junior high school, I averaged 30 points.'
"So I said, 'Well, there you go. 30 for 30. That's your nickname.' I tried to Google him and I didn't see that statistic. But the nickname is catchy, I like it. I don't know if it's going to stick, it's too early to tell, but as of right now the pending nickname for new guy Isaiah is 30 for 30."
So there you have it. Add 30 for 30 to Newton's amazing list of nicknames for his Patriots teammates. Now, we just need those Ford basketball highlights.
Ford had 18 catches for 184 yards through seven games with the Dolphins this season. He took part in his first Patriots practice on Wednesday.
Next up on the schedule for the Pats is a Sunday Night Football matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.
