Duron Harmon was at dentist when Bill Belichick told him he was traded from Patriots to Lions

More than a few reporters have described getting information out of Bill Belichick to be like pulling teeth.

Well, recently traded Patriots safety Duron Harmon had his own dental-work interaction with the coach on Wednesday. He was informed of his trade to the Detroit Lions by the Patriots coach while sitting in the dentist's chair.

Harmon explained in his introductory Skype session (that's the new way NFL acquisitions are being introduced in the coronavirus era) with reporter Tori Petry of the Lions team website:

Harmon said that as the dentist was wiggling his tooth, his phone began to vibrate. He saw it was Belichick, but didn't answer initially. Ten minutes later, the coach left a message to call him back.

"I finished getting my tooth taken out, my jaw's as puffy as ever, I call him back, we're on the phone, talking a little bit, some small talk, and he lets me know, right after my tooth's been taken out, 'You've been traded to the Lions,'" Harmon said.

So, having his Patriot career end right then and there after seven years "was a lot to process," said Harmon, who played with fellow Rutgers products and close friends Devin and Jason McCourty in the Pats secondary. "It was a lot of emotions, but in the end, it was the best thing for both situations. For myself, coming here and joining such a great organization and lead the way I know how, and the Patriots get some room on their salary cap."

Harmon is reunited with his former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, now the Lions head coach, in Detroit as well as former Patriots teammate Steve Gregory, the Lions defensive backs coach. Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins and defensive tackle Danny Shelton were free-agent signees of the Lions this week and ex-Pats defensive end Trey Flowers joined Patricia in Detroit last offseason.
