The New England Patriots’ 2021 NFL season began last week with a new quarterback, plenty of high-priced free agent additions and a … loss.
Bill Belichick turned to rookie Mac Jones for Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins after cutting Cam Newton. The No. 15 overall pick, Jones was steady and efficient in the Patriots’ 17-16 loss. He completed 29 of 39 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown. It was Jones’ teammates letting him down, though, as running backs Rhamondre Stevenson and Damien Harris each lost a fumble. Harris’ miscue was especially costly, as the Patriots were inside the red zone late in the fourth quarter, trailing by one point when the turnover occurred.
The Patriots’ free agent additions all played a key role in Week 1, and that should continue throughout the season. Nelson Agholor had a team-high 72 receiving yards and a touchdown against Miami, while tight ends Jonnu Smith (five catches for 42 yards) and Hunter Henry (three catches for 31 yards) both made solid first impressions.
In Week 2, the Patriots travel to New Jersey for another divisional game against the New York Jets. The Jets, led by a rookie quarterback of their own in Zach Wilson, lost 19-14 to the Carolina Panthers on the road in Week 1. New England hasn’t lost to New York since 2015, winning the last 10 meetings.
