Jamie Collins, Patriots defense still embracing ‘underdog' status

The New England Patriots' defense hasn't allowed a single point this season. It ranks first in the NFL in nearly every defensive category.

And yet its players still are convinced they have doubters.

Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins joined NFL Network's Deion Sanders for an interview Sunday night after New England dismantled the New York Jets 30-14 and told Sanders the defense is still playing with a chip on its shoulder.

"We're just going out here and doing what we've got to do," Collins said. "We appreciate being the underdog. That's the best way to be. You know about it."

The Patriots' defense hasn't typically been recognized as an elite unit. But after allowing a total of six points in its last four games dating to Super Bowl LIII (both Jets scores Sunday came on defensive and special teams touchdowns), New England's D clearly deserves that recognition.

Collins has been integral to that success, racking up 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, four quarterback hits and five tackles for loss over three games since re-signing with the Patriots this offseason.

Collins is well-versed in the Patriot Way, though, and deferred credit to his teammates, even telling Sanders he should call them next.

"We've got a bunch of experienced guys out there who are smart. Instincts are great," Collins told Sanders. "It's all 11 guys. It ain't just one or two of us. That's what makes us so special. Hopefully we can continue doing what we're doing and keep balling, and hopefully everybody gets the call. Call that whole D."
