Is Josh McDaniels a factor in why Patriots aren't pursuing Cam Newton?

The New England Patriots seemingly like the quarterback they have in Jarrett Stidham.

Their offensive coordinator also isn't a big fan of the QB they could sign to fill Tom Brady's void, per a report.

Patriots OC Josh McDaniels "wasn't necessarily high on" Cam Newton when he spoke to the Carolina Panthers about their head coach vacancy back in January, The Athletic's Joseph Person reported earlier this week.

Our Tom E. Curran has reported that Newton "isn't in the Patriots' plans" even after they didn't select a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Newton is one of the rare QBs to find success against New England; he's 2-0 versus the Patriots in his career with six touchdown passes, one interception and a 128.1 passer rating.

If Newton doesn't have McDaniels' stamp of approval, though, it's hard to see New England making an investment in him, especially considering his injury risk: The 30-year-old played in just two games last season due to a fractured foot.

Newton is a three-time Pro Bowler and former NFL MVP while the Patriots (supposedly) have one of the league's least talented QB rooms following Brady's departure, so the rumors connecting him to New England likely will persist until he signs elsewhere.

But the Patriots, who signed undrafted free agents J'Mar Smith and Brian Lewerke to complement Brian Hoyer and let Andy Dalton join the Dallas Cowboys, don't appear interested in acquiring a high-profile QB to compete with Stidham -- especially Newton.
