Josh McDaniels offers predictable response to latest head coach rumors

Josh McDaniels probably knew the questions were coming.

Reports that the Packers could hire McDaniels as their next head coach have gained considerable traction after Green Bay fired Mike McCarthy on Sunday.

During a conference call with reporters Tuesday, the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator was asked about those reports -- and essentially declined to comment.

"I don't really worry about the future, and honestly, each week is a tremendous challenge," McDaniels said, via NESN.com's Zack Cox. "We try to stay in the moment and think about the task at hand.

" ... I didn’t do nearly well enough in my role and my job last year when we went down there to Miami (to play the Dolphins), so there’s a lot for us to look at."

Despite that non-answer, McDaniels did reiterate he'd be open to pursuing a head coach job at some point.

"If that's in the cards for me, that's great," McDaniels added. "I've said that before. But I'm not worried about that right now."

The 42-year-old reportedly signed a five-year contract with the Patriots in September that made him the NFL's highest-paid coordinator. But enticing opportunities to coach Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay or Baker Mayfield on the Cleveland Browns could convince McDaniels to make his second attempt at an NFL head coach gig.

For now, however, it appears McDaniels is onto Miami, as any decision he makes about his future likely will come after the 2018 season.
