New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has been banged up with some sort of injury for most of the 2019 NFL season, but he was healthy enough to travel with his team for its Week 15 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon.
What are the chances of Edelman playing in the Patriots' final road game of the regular season? NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday morning that it's looking optimistic.
#Patriots WR Julian Edelman, who had a knee injury added to his ailing shoulder on the report this week, is optimistic about playing today, but the team wants to see him workout in the AM to be sure, I’m told.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 15, 2019
Edelman was on the injury report this week with knee/shoulder injuries. The 33-year-old veteran missed Wednesday's practice and was limited in both Thursday's and Friday's sessions. He's been on the injury report most weeks this season but has not missed a single game.
The Patriots offense has struggled mightily of late, averaging only 17.6 points scored over the last five games. Edelman has been one of the team's MVPs with 90 receptions for 1,010 yards and six touchdowns through 13 games. Despite his massive importance to the offense, it wouldn't be a bad idea to sit Edelman on Sunday so he's as healthy as possible for the playoffs next month. The Bengals have a league-worst 1-12 record and the Patriots don't need Edelman to leave Cincinnati with a victory.
Edelman is one of the toughest players in the league, though. If he's able to play, you can bet he'll try to give it a go.
