NFL MVP odds: Only one Patriots player listed in latest betting lines

Share

The NFL has seen a lot of player movement over the last two weeks thanks to an exciting free agency period and a few surprising trades. And it's all had an impact on the latest betting lines for the 2020 NFL MVP winner.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is the reigning MVP after a breakout 2019 campaign. It's been 10 years since a player last won MVP in back-to-back seasons. Peyton Manning was the last to do it in 2008 and 2009. Despite that historical trend, oddsmakers still like Jackson's chances of winning again. Jackson is second on the newest MVP betting odds from William Hill in Las Vegas.

Here are the updated odds:

New England Patriots fans will notice the team's former quarterback, Tom Brady, is fourth on the list at 18-1 odds. Brady is in a great position to win the fourth MVP of his career. He took his talents to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency, where he'll be surrounded by a lot of talented offensive players, which should help him put up MVP-caliber stats. Helping the Bucs end their 12-year playoff appearance drought also would help make a compelling MVP narrative.

There's one current Patriots player on the list, and it's running back Sony Michel at 200-1 odds. Michel had a strong rookie season in 2018, and he was even better in the playoffs with six rushing touchdowns during New England's run to a Super Bowl LIII title. Michel, and the Patriots' run game as a whole, took a step back in 2019 as the offensive line dealt with injuries to multiple players.

Some fans might be surprised that Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore couldn't crack the list, especially after winning Defensive Player of the Year last season. The fact is defensive players rarely get any recognition when it comes to MVP voting. The last defensive player to win league MVP was New York Giants linebacker and Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor in 1986. Since then, every MVP winner has been a quarterback or running back.

Even though the Patriots don't have a legit MVP candidate, they still have the eighth-best odds to win Super Bowl LV.
