NFL odds: Can these Patriots end team's Defensive Rookie of the Year drought?

The New England Patriots have had some stellar defenses under head coach Bill Belichick, but their individual players don't always get accolades.

Case in point: Since the award's inception in 1967, only two Patriots players have won the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year Award: cornerback Mike Haynes in 1976 and linebacker Jerod Mayo in 2008.

But with Mayo now on staff as the team's linebackers coach, can another New England rookie follow in his footsteps? Here's a look at the latest 2019 Defensive Player of the Year odds, per DraftKings Sportsbook:

The Patriots don't have a rookie in the top five, which features Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Devin Bush and New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

But defensive end Chase Winovich (33/1 odds) and cornerback Joejuan Williams (50/1) rank 9th and 14th, respectively, as the Patriots and Steelers (cornerback Justin Layne) are the only two NFL teams with two players in the top 15.

Winovich helped his cause by tallying two sacks in New England's preseason opener against the Detroit Lions. Michael Bennett and Deatrich Wise Jr. are established as the Patriots' two starting defensive ends, but there's still room for the 24-year-old Michigan product to carve out a role on this multiple defense.

Williams faces more of an uphill battle, as he'll have to fight for playing time in a deep cornerback group that includes All-Pro Stephon Gilmore, Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones and J.C. Jackson.

The Patriots' defense doesn't usually thrive on star power, so Winovich and Williams look like long shots for now -- unlike wide receiver N'Keal Harry, who has pretty decent odds for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
