NFL odds: Patriots vs. Dolphins Week 1 spread revealed

The New England Patriots are betting favorites in their first game of the post-Tom Brady era.

The Patriots will open the 2020 NFL season against the rival Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, and oddsmakers are pretty confident in New England's chances of victory.

The 11-time defending AFC East champs are favored by nearly a touchdown.

Here are the latest betting lines for Patriots vs. Dolphins in Week 1, courtesy of PointsBet.

Spread: Patriots -6.5 (-110)

Moneyline: Patriots -301, Dolphins +240

Over/Under: Over 43 (-105), Under 43 (-115)

This spread is a little high when you consider the offseason both of these teams went through.

The Patriots have had to deal with a ton of roster turnover, especially on defense where key veterans including Dont'a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Kyle Van Noy, Duron Harmon and others either left the team or opted out. And, of course, Brady took his talents to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency, opening the door for Cam Newton to sign with the Patriots and win the starting quarterback job in training camp.

Newton, if healthy, should give the Pats strong quarterback play throughout the season, but he's only been working in this offense for about two months.

The Dolphins were busy adding talent in free agency, mostly on defense with the additions of ex-Pats linebackers Elandon Roberts and Van Noy, as well as former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Byron Jones. The Dolphins also drafted Alabama star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in April, but veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Sunday.

Miami won five of its last nine games last season, including an impressive Week 17 upset victory over the Patriots at Gillette Stadium that prevented New England from earning a first round bye in the AFC playoffs.

The Patriots are 6-4 heads up and 6-4 against the spread (ATS) in their last 10 games versus the Dolphins. New England has outscored Miami by almost 13 points per game over that span.
