NFL rumors: Cardinals willing to keep Josh Rosen despite drafting Kyler Murray

The Arizona Cardinals took Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft on Thursday night, immediately raising questions about Josh Rosen's future with the team.

Arizona selected Rosen with the 10th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He had a decent rookie season for the Cardinals in 2018, but the addition of Murray gives Arizona two young players at the position with only one starting job.

One option for the Cardinals is to trade Rosen for draft picks and continue rebuilding their roster. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday that three teams have talked to the Cardinals about Rosen this offseason. It also appears the Cardinals are willing to keep Rosen if necessary.

The three teams that have spoken to the Cardinals this off-season about Josh Rosen are the Giants, Dolphins and Chargers. But Rosen has been a backup plan at best for all three. Arizona has no issues keeping Rosen; it is prepared to keep him if it doesn’t get a suitable offer.

The Giants probably are no longer an option for Rosen because they selected Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the No. 6 pick. The Miami Dolphins need a starting quarterback of the present and future, so they might be a good trade partner for Arizona. The Los Angeles Chargers are still a top contender in the AFC with veteran quarterback Philip Rivers leading their offense, but he's 37 years old. They're not a bad option for the Cardinals, either.

Keeping Rosen into the 2019 season would be a foolish move for the Cardinals. They have a lot of roster weaknesses to address, and spending top 10 picks in back-to-back years on quarterbacks isn't the best way to accomplish that goal.

CURRAN: Patriots should go get Rosen

Another team rumored to be interested in Rosen was the New England Patriots. The Patriots have Brian Hoyer and Danny Etling on their roster as backup quarterbacks, but neither player is a good long-term solution to replace 41-year-old Tom Brady when he eventually retires.
