NFL rumors: Free agent Delanie Walker receiving interest from Patriots

The New England Patriots need more depth and experience at tight end, and if they want to go the free agent route to address those needs, Delanie Walker is among the best players available.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Monday morning that Walker is receiving interest from the Patriots, among other teams.

Walker is coming off two injury-plagued seasons. He missed all but one game during the 2018 season before missing nine games in 2019 due to an ankle injury. If healthy, Walker could be effective both as a pass-catcher and a run blocker. He tallied at least 60 receptions and 800 receiving yards in four consecutive seasons from 2014 through 2017.

The Patriots are thin at tight end, to say the least.

Matt LaCosse reportedly has decided to opt out of the 2020 NFL season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He was projected to be the starting tight end for the Patriots entering Week 1 of the regular season. His absence leaves the Pats with Ryan Izzo and two rookies -- Dalton Keene and Devin Asiasi -- atop their tight end depth chart.

Bringing in a veteran who can contribute in all facets of the position would be an ideal move for the Patriots, and Walker is among the best free agents to target if Bill Belichick looks outside the organization for help.
