NFL Rumors: Patriots add tight end Michael Roberts in trade with Lions

The New England Patriots reportedly are addressing their lack of depth at tight end.

The Patriots are acquiring tight end Michael Roberts from the Detroit Lions in exchange for a late-round draft pick, Justin Rogers of the Detroit News reported Thursday morning. ESPN's Adam Schefter added that pick will be a seventh-round conditional selection in 2020.

Roberts, a fourth-round pick by the Lions in 2017, doesn't have much NFL experience, with 13 catches, 146 yards and three touchdowns over two seasons in Detroit.

But New England could use some help at the position, as Matt LaCosse currently is the No. 1 tight end on the depth chart with Ben Watson suspended for the first four games of the season.

The Patriots also lost Rob Gronkowski to retirement this offseason and recently released Austin Seferian-Jenkins, leaving them without a proven veteran at tight end with Watson on the shelf.

Roberts isn't that proven tight end, but New England's trade with a familiar club -- Lions general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia both came from the Patriots -- should provide some help.

Every summer, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are tasked with building a roster around Tom Brady that can compete for a Super Bowl. This summer is no different for the defending champions.

They've lost key pieces, like superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski, who retired after nine seasons in New England. They've reunited with some familiar facesn like Ben Watson, Michael Bennett and Jamie Collins. They've added wide receivers old (Demaryius Thomas) and wide receivers new (Dontrelle Inman).

They've made trades, signed free agents, and taken some flyers. Some will pan out, but many won't.

Check out this guide on who's left the team, and how the Pats have replaced them.
