NFL Rumors: Patriots cut safety Obi Melifonwu after Kyle Dugger draft pick

The New England Patriots' 2020 roster is changing by the day.

The Patriots are releasing safety Obi Melifonwu as they make room for their 2020 NFL Draft class, ESPN's Field Yates reported Monday.

New England used its top draft pick (No. 37) on Lenoir-Rhyne safety Kyle Dugger, so it's not surprising to see the team release a safety in a corresponding move.

Melifonwu, who grew up in Grafton, Mass., and played his college ball at the University of Connecticut, joined the Patriots in 2018 and appeared in two games during their Super Bowl LIII-winning campaign.

The 26-year-old spent 2019 on New England's practice squad, though, and was unlikely to crack the team's deep secondary in 2020.

Here's the Patriots' updated safety depth chart after Melifonwu's release, per ESPN's Mike Reiss.

The Patriots also released edge rusher Keionta Davis on Sunday as they reshuffle their roster after drafting 10 players and signing several undrafted free agents this weekend.

Some of those roster cuts could re-sign with the team down the line, but expect more roster casualties in the coming days.
