NFL Rumors: Patriots may get bumped from 2019 opening night game

NFL Rumors: Patriots may get bumped from 2019 opening night game

The NFL reportedly is considering breaking with tradition at the expense of the New England Patriots.

The league is "leaning toward" having the Chicago Bears host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, Sept. 5, to kick off the 2019 NFL season, John Ourand of the SportsBusiness Journal reported Monday.

If this happens, the Patriots would become the first defending Super Bowl champion since 2006 not to play in the NFL's first game of the season.

The NFL is celebrating its 100th season in 2019, which is why it's considering featuring Bears-Packers -- the league's oldest rivalry -- in its Thursday night opener on NBC.

Per Ourand, the Patriots would bump to NBC's "Sunday Night Football" game if Bears-Packers is on Thursday night.

It's still unclear who New England would play, but it likely would be a high-profile opponent: Ourand speculates the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers all are on the table.

The Patriots' 2019 opponents already are set, but the official schedule likely won't be finalized until April, according to Ourand.

Phillip Dorsett was on the receiving end of Julian Edelman's go-ahead touchdown pass in the third quarter of Sunday's Patriots-Eagles matchup, but he paid a hefty price.

Watch Julian Edelman throw TD pass to Phillip Dorsett on Patriots' trick play

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman showed off his old quarterback skills to score a much-needed touchdown early in the third quarter of Sunday's Week 11 game versus the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Patriots opened the second half with the ball and moved down the field with ease against the Eagles defense. New England entered the red zone for the fourth time in the game and scored their first TD thanks to an Edelman pass to fellow wide receiver Phillip Dorsett.

Brady took the snap on 3rd-and-11, threw to Edelman, who found a wide open Dorsett for a 15-yard score. The veteran wideout took a huge hit in the end zone but held onto the ball.

Take a look at the trick play in the video below:

It was Edelman's first touchdown pass since the 2014 AFC Divisional Round win over the Baltimore Ravens. Edelman, as you might already know, was a quarterback in college at Kent State. His NFL passing stats, as ESPN's Mike Reiss pointed out, are pretty good.
