NFL Rumors: Patriots' Stephon Gilmore to join 99 overall club in Madden 21

Stephon Gilmore is indisputably one of the best defensive players in the NFL, and it looks like the upcoming "Madden 21" video game will recognize him as such.

The New England Patriots cornerback will be one of the few players in Madden's exclusive "99 Club" this year, according to a photo of player ratings that leaked Monday on Twitter.

If true, it certainly comes as no surprise. Gilmore earned NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors after a sensational 2019 season in which he tied for the league lead in interceptions (six) while tallying 20 passes defended. The 29-year-old is a two-time first-team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler who has established himself as perhaps the best cornerback in the game.

The other three players in Madden 21's "99 Club" are Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, and Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald. Gilmore, McCaffrey, and Donald have yet to be officially announced as "99 Club" members, but Mahomes was confirmed on Monday.

EA Sports will reveal players with 99 overall ratings throughout the week, and a recent tweet of theirs suggests there could be more than just the four aforementioned players.

"Madden 21" is set to be released Aug. 25.
