NFL Rumors: Patriots work out four receivers after Edelman injury

NFL Rumors: Patriots work out four receivers after Edelman injury

The New England Patriots apparently are well aware they'll be down a top wide receiver entering training camp.

The Patriots worked out wide receivers Nick Williams (previously with the Tennessee Titans), Justin Hunter (Pittsburgh Steelers), Papi White (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Travin Dural (New Orleans Saints) on Monday, ESPN's Field Yates reported.

The news comes hours after it was reported that wideout Julian Edelman is expected to miss roughly three weeks due to a thumb injury, meaning he'll likely sit out New England's first preseason game on Aug. 8.

Hunter is probably the most recognizable name on this list, having spent the previous two seasons with the Steelers and once amassing 498 receiving yards in 2014 with the Titans.

Williams is a UConn alum who caught just two passes last season, while White and Dural have yet to play an NFL snap after going undrafted in the 2019 and 2017 drafts, respectively.

Of course, the Patriots have plenty of internal candidates to replace Edelman's training camp workload, including rookie N'Keal Harry and free-agent signings Dontrelle Inman and Maurice Harris.

NFL Preseason: Which Patriots are on the roster bubble?

NFL Preseason: Which Patriots are on the roster bubble?

Now that Demaryius Thomas is off the PUP list, Josh Gordon has been reinstated and Julian Edelman is off the NFI list, what was looking like a thin group of Patriots wide receivers suddenly looks very different.

And considering that Jakobi Meyers has opened eyes with his preseason performance and N'Keal Harry was a first-round draft pick, the fight for roster spots is intense among other Patriots wideouts.

Can Phillip Dorsett, Maurice Harris, or Braxton Berrios do enough to secure a roster spot for the 2019 season? A good performance in New England's preseason game against the Panthers Thursday night would certainly help.

While that competition might be front and center, there are players fighting for jobs up and down the roster. Teams must cut rosters down to 53 players on August 31, so time is running short.

Phil Perry has been filing roster-projections throughout the offseason, and thinks several players are living squarely on the roster bubble.

Tom Brady fired up for preseason game vs. Panthers: 'Let's go, baby!"

Tom Brady fired up for preseason game vs. Panthers: 'Let's go, baby!"

Tom Brady looks like someone who's ready to take the field for the first time this preseason.

The New England Patriots quarterback arrived in style for Thursday night's matchup vs. the Carolina Panthers, donning a Cam Newton-style top hat and saying "let's go, baby."

Watch:

While there's no official word yet on whether Brady will get any playing time, he said earlier this week he hopes this is the week he'll be out there.

It would make sense for this to be Brady's first appearance as the Panthers are expected to play Newton, Christian McCaffrey, and the rest of their starters vs. the Patriots.

If Brady sits for a third straight game, expect a heavy dose of rookie Jarrett Stidham as he aims to keep his impressive preseason going.
