NFL Rumors: Redskins to sign QB Mark Sanchez after Alex Smith injury

Share

The Washington Redskins needed to add a quarterback in the wake of Alex Smith's season-ending injury suffered Sunday against the Houston Texans, and they have made an interesting choice with Thanksgiving coming up.

The Redskins are expected to sign veteran QB Mark Sanchez to back up Colt McCoy, per multiple reports.

Ironically, the Redskins play the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving. That game is scheduled for Nov. 22, which is the six-year anniversary of the infamous "butt fumble" during which Sanchez ran into an offensive lineman from behind, lost the ball and gave up a New England Patriots touchdown in one of the most memorable Thanksgiving NFL moments. The Patriots defeated Sanchez and the New York Jets 49-19 at MetLife Stadium. Sanchez played just four more games for the Jets.

Sanchez didn't play last season. He was a member of the Chicago Bears but was inactive for all 16 games. He was suspended for four games in April after failing a performance-enhancing drug test. His most recent regular-season appearance was in 2016, when he played in two games as a backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.

Sanchez has thrown for 15,219 yards with 86 touchdowns and 86 interceptions over seven seasons.
