Week 8 Survivor Pool: The safest bets and off-the-radar options

As we approach the halfway point in the 2021 NFL season, choosing the right team for your survivor pool is only getting tougher.

Unless you're a psychic, you've probably leaned mostly on the league's top teams to get you through the last seven weeks. That means it may be time to take a chance on some riskier picks to separate yourself from the pack going forward. Of course, we don't want to get too crazy just yet...

So, which teams can you count on to carry you to the next round? Here are the trendy picks, under-the-radar options, and traps to avoid in your survivor pools for Week 8.

Trendy Picks

Cincinnati Bengals at New York Jets

The Bengals are the top pick of the week following their impressive 41-17 win over the Ravens in Baltimore. The Joe Burrow-Ja'Marr Chase combination is looking unstoppable, and it's no surprise 49 percent of survivor pool players expect that to continue in Week 8 vs. the lowly Jets. Pick Cincinnati with confidence, but just know the rest of your pool is probably doing the same.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. New York Giants

The Chiefs have been by far the biggest disappointment of the 2021 season so far. Those who have depended on them in survivor pools probably have been burnt by their horrific defense and Patrick Mahomes' surprisingly subpar play. We should see a bounce-back performance this week at home against the Giants. If not, Kansas City has even more issues to work out than we thought.

Buffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins

If you're one of the few who hasn't used the Bills yet in your pool, now is a great time. The Dolphins are one of the league's worst teams and are coming off losses to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons. Buffalo, 6-1 so far this season, is fresh off a bye week and looking to get back on track after a loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Under the Radar

Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts

Tennessee has won three straight games including impressive victories over the Bills and Chiefs. The Colts aren't a team that will roll over, but the Titans offense has been firing on all cylinders as of late with MVP candidate Derrick Henry leading the charge. They're a solid pick if you're looking for an outside-the-box option.

Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers

We get it, picking the Falcons is gross. You'll never be able to forgive yourself if your survivor pool run ends with an Atlanta loss. That said, there's reason to believe the Falcons are a great under-the-radar pick in Week 8. The Panthers have lost four straight games since their 3-0 start. Sam Darnold is beginning to show why the Jets moved on from him as their quarterback, and Christian McCaffrey's absence is glaring. If you're feeling risky, this is a pick that can pay off in the long run.

It's A Trap!

Philadelphia Eagles at Detroit Lions

I'm just going to keep on saying "don't bet against the Lions" until they finally prove me right. They've come so close to earning some pretty impressive wins this season, only to lose in crushing fashion. Last week it was a hard-fought 28-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. With the Eagles struggling, I think this could finally be the week Detroit earns its first W under Dan Campbell.

Los Angeles Chargers vs. New England Patriots

Sure, it was the Jets, but we can't just ignore that the Patriots put up 54 points last week and are trending upward after a rocky start to the season. Plus, New England stunned L.A. with a 45-0 win last year. Save the Chargers for a better matchup, like next week vs. Philly.
