The Houston Texans absolutely shocked the football world Monday by agreeing to trade one of the NFL's best wide receivers in DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for an underwhelming return package.
Here are the parameters of the agreed upon trade.
DeAndre Hopkins and a fourth round pick go to Cards for David Johnson and a second round pick this year and a fourth round pick next year.— John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) March 16, 2020
David Johnson is a good running back and a 2020 second-round pick is nice, but how did the Texans trade one of the three-best wideouts and not get a first-round pick? The NFL is a passing league, and Hopkins teamed up with star quarterback Deshaun Watson to give Houston one of the most talented QB-WR tandems in the sport. Hopkins is up for a new contract soon and there's been reports of friction between he and Texans head coach Bill O'Brien, but there's still no defense for what Houston got in return for an elite player.
Violating my own media rule here: the relationship between Bill O’Brien and DeAndre Hopkins was not good, and I’ve heard that from multiple places.— Mike Meltser (@MikeMeltser) March 16, 2020
My own take: Bill O’Brien hasn’t accomplished enough in his life in football to have a bad relationship with a tremendous player
The good news for the rest of the AFC, including the New England Patriots, is that one of the conference's top contenders just lost arguably their best player without a suitable replacement on the roster.
You can probably imagine there's been no shortage of takes when it comes to this blockbuster deal. Here's some of the best Twitter reaction to the shocking Hopkins trade.
Bill O'Brien and the Texans had one of the best QB-WR combos in the league and they just traded DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals ... pic.twitter.com/OlmKILiaoO— SB Nation (@SBNation) March 16, 2020
A year ago, Hopkins & Clowney were two of the Texans four best players. They are both now gone (along with a ’19 4th round pick) for:— Sean Pendergast (@SeanTPendergast) March 16, 2020
Gareon Conley (via SEA ’19 3rd round pick)
’19 2nd round pick
'20 4th round pick
AWFUL. Just AWFUL.
Man we need start drug testing some of these GM’s and coaches lol #questionablemoves— Cam Heyward (@CamHeyward) March 16, 2020
Huh??? The Texans trading DeAndre Hopkins!?— Emmanuel Acho (@thEMANacho) March 16, 2020
Bill O’Brien the coach, needs to go slap the hell out of Bill O’Brien the GM, immediately!!!
If, at any point going forward, you want to criticize any move made by the Steelers, think about the Houston Texans trading DeAndre Hopkins and be glad your team didn't make such a ridiculous and incomprehensible trade.— Gerry Dulac (@gerrydulac) March 16, 2020

The #Texans woke up today without a first-round pick. They traded Deandre Hopkins. And still don't have a first-round pick.— NFL Update (@MySportsUpdate) March 16, 2020

I'm no GM but I have a feeling trading Hopkins will turn out to be a STUPID move #Texans— Trevor Lehey (@LeheyTrevor) March 16, 2020
Just realized the Texans have now traded for 3 running backs since last summer who were all backups on their former teams (David Johnson, Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson).— Rob Goldberg (@TheRobGoldberg) March 16, 2020
Forget that it cost them DeAndre Hopkins or any draft picks, that strategy alone is insane.
The #Texans go from being up 24-0 in the AFC Divisional Round over the eventual Super Bowl champs, to trading away DeAndre Hopkins before they ever step on the field again...— Jay Tust (@KTVBSportsGuy) March 16, 2020
(Thanks to @tj__92 for the correction.)
Woah!— Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes) March 16, 2020
I can’t understand why #Texans Bill O’Brien has the power he does. How do you trade Clowney and Hopkins and not land a single 1st rounder?— Anthony DiMoro (@AnthonyDiMoro) March 16, 2020
BUT, he gave a treasure chest of picks for Tunsil?
Louis Riddick @LRiddickESPN on ESPN re the DeAndre Hopkins trade: “This is the risk you run when your head coach also doubles as your general manager and he doesn’t have a system of real, legitimate, valid checks and balances, because whatever he says goes.” #Texans— David Barron (@dfbarron) March 16, 2020
Hayden Hurst was the same value as Hopkins? Bill O’Brien is officially a terrible GM and terrible Coach!— Texans Storm Report (@ThePatrickStorm) March 16, 2020
like 20 minutes ago we were all like "lol if the Texans give up ANYTHING in the deal where they take on David Johnson's salary they're idiots" and then it turns out they're giving up DeAndre Hopkins— Rodger Sherman (@rodger) March 16, 2020

Is there a better wide receiver trio in the NFL tight now? I don't think so. #Cardinals
