Oddsmakers favor Patriots in Super Bowl, but that's not a good sign

By now, you probably already know that Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are playing in their ninth Super Bowl together as he chases a record sixth ring, which would be the most of any player in NFL history. But did you know that the Patriots are the only favorites to win the big game in the past seven years, with underdogs on a 6-1 run?

It's true, and New England has also never won a Super Bowl by more than six points and needed a miraculous sequence of events to make that happen two years ago when they stunned the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime for their last Vince Lombardi Trophy.

As consensus 2.5-point favorites versus the Los Angeles Rams on the Super Bowl odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com, the Patriots are hoping to avoid a repeat of last year when they fell 41-33 to the Philadelphia Eagles as 4.5-point chalk.

You have to go back to Super Bowl 43 to find the last time the favorite won but did not cover the spread, as the Pittsburgh Steelers (-7) edged the Arizona Cardinals, 27-23. Before that, New England fell short of covering as a seven-point favorite in back-to-back years in wins over the Philadelphia Eagles (24-21) and Carolina Panthers (32-29).

The Patriots have gone a disappointing 3-6-1 against the spread all-time in the Super Bowl despite going 5-3 SU during the era of Brady and head coach Bill Belichick, the subject of many Super Bowl prop bets for Sunday.

With the Super Bowl odds 2019 sitting below three points, all that will likely matter Sunday is who wins the game for bettors looking to cash their wagers on either side. Only one team has ever won the Super Bowl by less than three points: The New York Giants, when they defeated the Buffalo Bills 20-19 as seven-point underdogs in Super Bowl 25.

In the eight previous Super Bowl appearances for New England with Brady and Belichick, six of them have been decided by four points or less, although the last two have both been decided by six or more. In either case, the winning team in those eight games also covered the spread six times.

So the odds of covering Sunday are in your favor if you can just find a way to pick the winner.
