Patriots' Bill Belichick earns Sports Emmy nomination in ironic category

Want another sign the apocalypse is near?

Bill Belichick has been tabbed as one of America's outstanding sports personalities.

You read that right: The famously dour New England Patriots head coach has been nominated for a Sports Emmy in the category, "Outstanding Sports Personality: Studio Analyst."

The other nominees include actual sports personalities Charles Barkley, Jay Bilas, Al Leiter, Kenny Smith and Michael Strahan, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The craziest part is that Belichick actually deserves the nomination: The Patriots coach was enlightening and borderline charismatic as a guest analyst on NFL Network's "NFL 100 All-Time Team" panel last fall.

"He was so into it. So totally, crazy into it," panel host Rich Eisen told our Tom E. Curran on the Patriots Talk Podcast in December. "He was the perfect analyst for it because he grew up watching some of these guys, and he was introduced to a lot of them through his father."

" ... We couldn't have asked for a better mix of knowledge in one human brain."

A football nerd at heart, Belichick gushed about how much he enjoyed being on the panel in a late-season press conference. That enthusiasm clearly came through on camera, and now the six-time Super Bowl champion (eight-time if you count his two rings with the New York Giants as defensive coordinator) has the chance to add another trophy to his mantle.

It's unclear when we'll find out if Belichick won, though: The 2020 Sports Emmys were scheduled for April 28 but have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
