Patriots' Damien Harris draws intriguing comparison to Ezekiel Elliott

The New England Patriots drafted Sony Michel in the first round last year. They return three running backs who contributed regularly in 2018 and signed Brandon Bolden this offseason.

So, what motivated them to add another back to their stable in Alabama's Damien Harris?

Here's one reason: If you ask The Athletic's NFL Draft analyst, Dane Brugler, the Patriots got a "darn good football player" with the No. 87 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Brugler joined NBC Sports Boston's Tom E. Curran on the latest edition of "Quick Slants The Podcast" and made a promising NFL comparison for Harris.

"The best player comparison I have for him is, I think he's a 75 percent version of Ezekiel Elliott," Brugler told Curran. "He can do everything on the football field: block, catch (and) obviously he's reliable running the ball. So, if you're getting a 75 percent version of Zeke, that's a pretty good value there in the third round."

There you have it: Put Harris down for 1,075.5 rushing yards, 425.3 receiving yards and 4.5 touchdowns this season.

We're kidding, of course (those numbers are 75 percent of Elliott's 2018 totals), but Brugler's point stands: Harris more than doubled his receiving output from 2017 (91 yards) to 2018 (204 yards), showcasing part of the all-around game that makes Elliott such a dynamic part of the Dallas Cowboys' offense.

"A guy that can be on the field in any situation -- it doesn't matter down or distance -- you don't know what he's going to do, because he can do everything," Brugler told Curran. "And so that versatility is key when you roll out different personnel packages and the different things that the Patriots like to do."

Harris will have to work to even get on the field with James White, Michel and Rex Burkhead ahead of him on New England's depth chart. But the 22-year-old's well-rounded game could help him find a niche in Josh McDaniels' offense.
