Remember when we thought Jarrett Stidham would be the New England Patriots' Week 1 starting quarterback?
Now, the second-year QB won't even suit up against the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.
Stidham is one of New England's five inactives for its season opener, meaning Brian Hoyer will be Cam Newton's lone backup at QB.
Here are the Patriots' inactives vs. Miami:
QB Jarrett Stidham
TE Dalton Keene
OT Korey Cunningham
LB Josh Uche
LB Cassh Maluia
Stidham reportedly dealt with a leg injury in training camp, so it's possible the injury played a factor in the 24-year-old being inactive. He wasn't listed on the team's injury report, though, so perhaps the Patriots simply viewed the veteran Hoyer as a better resource for Newton in his first Patriots start.
Uche and Keene are projected as immediate-impact rookies, but it appears they won't be contributing in Week 1.
Here are the Dolphins' inactives for Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff:
RB Malcolm Perry
WR Lynn Bowden
SS Clayton Fejedelem
DE Jason Strowbridge
OG Adam Pankey
