Patriots' James White to miss Week 3 vs. Jets to be with wife for birth of child

New England Patriots running back James White will miss Sunday's Week 3 game against the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium so he can be with his wife as they prepare for the birth of their first child.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported White's status Sunday morning.

The Patriots likely will devote a larger part of the game plan to Rex Burkhead in White's absence. Burkhead has seven receptions for a team-leading (among running backs) 88 yards this season, and he should continue to play a meaningful role in the passing game with White out.

Sony Michel will continue to start at running back and receive the bulk of the carries. Michel tallied 183 yards and a touchdown in two games against the Jets last season.

Oddsmakers have pegged the Patriots as 22.5-point favorites Sunday.
