After spending back to back picks on the offensive line, the New England Patriots changed this up with the 204th overall pick.

In the sixth round, the Patriots opted to add some talent on defense and took a linebacker. That player was Wyoming's Cassh Maluia.

Maluia was a productive four-year player at Wyoming and logged 67 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two interceptions as a senior. He was overshadowed by his teammate (Logan Wilson, a third-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals) but he evidently did enough to impress the Patriots at his Pro Day, as our own Phil Perry detailed.

Maluia's a thickly-built linebacker but has solid speed. He figures to be a special teams player early in his career and it's unlikely that he will do much on defense to start his career.

The Patriots' selection of Maluia marks the fourth pick that the Patriots have spent on defense in this year's draft. The others were safety Kyle Dugger (Lenoir-Rhyne), edge rusher Josh Uche (Michigan), and linebacker Anfernee Jennings (Alabama).
