Patriots' DB depth chart with Jonathan Jones on IR is concerning

The New England Patriots' secondary has gone from one of the team's biggest strengths to a glaring weakness.

The Patriots lost another cornerback Saturday when they placed Jonathan Jones on injured reserve. Jones, who suffered a shoulder injury in last Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys, can't return until at least Week 10.

New England already is thin at the position after ruling out cornerback Shaun Wade (concussion) for Sunday's game against the New York Jets. Cornerback Jalen Mills and safety Adrian Phillips both are questionable against the Jets due to injuries, as well.

With former Patriots star Stephon Gilmore set to make his Carolina Panthers debut soon following his trade from New England earlier this month, here's a look at who's left in the secondary for the Patriots entering Week 7:

Cornerback

J.C. Jackson, Jalen Mills, Myles Bryant, Joejuan Williams

Safety

Devin McCourty, Kyle Dugger, Adrian Phillips, Justin Bethel, Cody Davis

If Mills is able to play Sunday, he's the likely boundary cornerback opposite Jackson. Bryant, who has appeared in two games and taken 20 total defensive snaps this season, then could fill Jones' role as slot cornerback.

Williams has been inactive for two of the Patriots' last three games, but he might be thrust into action Sunday depending on the availability of Mills and Phillips.

This depleted group will have to bounce back after allowing 445 passing yards -- the most ever given up by a Patriots defense under Bill Belichick -- to Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6. Zach Wilson threw zero touchdown passes and four interceptions the last time these teams met in Week 2, though, so perhaps they can replicate some of that success.

The Patriots also elevated defensive lineman Daniel Ekuale and offensive lineman James Ferentz to the active roster ahead of Sunday's 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium.
