Patriots Talk: Cassel on the Jones vs. Newton QB competition

Patriots

The New England Patriots quarterback competition undoubtedly will be the team's top storyline of the summer.

Mac Jones will join Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham on the QB depth chart after being selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick adamantly stated during his press conference that Newton is the team's quarterback, but how long will that last?

Curran: It's hard to envision Mac Jones stepping in right away

In a brand new Patriots Talk Podcast, Matt Cassel joined Tom E. Curran and Phil Perry to discuss the QB competition that is set to take place in Foxboro and how it'll be approached by the players and coaches.

"A lot of people don't understand how much time you spend within that [quarterback] group, in that small group, and how much time you spend in meetings, on the field, walkthroughs with [Josh] McDaniels," Cassel said. "You start to grow this personality within the room and you respect each other and all that, but then they always an emphasis on competition, and that's what it's going to come down to. And you know when you're playing well, you know when you don't, and as a player it can be difficult when you're sitting there and the younger guy's outperforming you or you feel like the writing's on the wall.

"At the same time, you're trying to do everything you possibly can as a professional, as a quarterback and as a competitor, to keep your job. [Cam Newton] is gonna do everything in his power, he's gonna work hard just like he did last year and put himself hopefully in a position to win the job. At the same time, Mac Jones has to go about his business. And look, it can't be confrontational because you don't want that in your room, and Josh McDaniels has to do a good job of handling personalities and so does Bill Belichick. But at the end of the day, it's going to play out how it's going to play out, and the players have to understand that as well."
