Patriots Talk Podcast: Will Bill Belichick treat Cam Newton differently than Tom Brady?

Share

The addition of Cam Newton sparked excitement in New England as the Patriots prepare for the post-Tom Brady era. But there still are plenty of questions that will need to be answered over these next couple of months.

For instance, will Newton buy into Bill Belichick's strict regime? Will Belichick treat Newton the same way he has treated Brady for the last 20 years?

Tom E. Curran and Phil Perry discuss those questions on the latest episode of the Patriots Talk Podcast, and neither is convinced there will be a smooth adjustment for the player or the head coach. Especially with such little time for Newton to get up to speed with the Patriots' offense.

"Cam Newton, like Peyton Manning, like anyone else drafted No. 1 overall who's been nothing but 'the anointed one' for a long time probably hasn't been coached hard by a Ron Rivera or whoever else since he's been in the NFL. Certainly not the way Bill Belichick does it. Who changes this year?" Curran asked Perry.

"I'm not sure either of them will," Perry answered. "I don't know if either of them can. Especially when you have had success doing things one way. Let's face it, Cam Newton has been the guy. Even when he was humbled to the point where he went to Blinn College in Nowhere, Texas and had to play a year of JUCO football ... [Newton and the head coach] would meet each week and Cam Newton would come in, and if he didn't like what he was being told, if he just didn't like how he was being coached, he would tell him, "Coach that wasn't good this week, you've got to be better next week.

"On the one hand you can say that's a player pushing his coach, that's a player who wants to get the best out of himself, out of the team moving forward. But on the other, you can say that's somebody who's not at all inclined to defer because he's the man ... so Cam Newton is Cam Newton, and I don't think he's changing. And one of the things that I don't know is going to go great here, Tom, is if it doesn't go well early ... It's hard for me to envision offensive success, and if they don't have that, how does he handle it?"

Curran and Perry also cover key dates of the Patriots returning to camp, Patriots winners and losers with no preseason, whether Belichick will benefit from the 2020 NFL chaos, and much more.
