Phillip Dorsett impressed with ‘detail-oriented' special teams coordinator turned WR coach, Joe Judge

The New England Patriots coaching staff underwent a lot of change this offseason, but one of the biggest on the offensive side comes at the wide receivers coach. The team lost Chad O'Shea to the Miami Dolphins, as he will be the new offensive coordinator on Brian Flores' staff with the Miami Dolphins.

In the wake of losing O'Shea, the Patriots made an unconventional move to fill the vacancy. The team elected to make Joe Judge their receivers coach. This is notable because Judge is also coordinating special teams for the Patriots and has been involved in that aspect of the game since 2012.

But so far, Judge has apparently done a good job and has impressed veteran wide-out Phillip Dorsett with his performance in his new role.

"(He's) really, really, really, really detail-oriented," Dorsett said of Judge per ESPN's Mike Reiss. "I think that's good for us, because he breaks down everything for us. Obviously, he's learning on the fly, but he's doing a really good job as it comes to detailing everything. I think it's helping us because we have a lot of younger guys who need the detail."

Dorsett would also say that Judge is handling the job "pretty well right now", so it appears that the 37-year-old coach is ready for the increased responsibility.

It will be interesting to see what Judge is able to do with a Patriots receiving corps that is fairly unsettled beyond Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman and first-round rookie N'Keal Harry. Judge will have his work cut out for him, but if he can unearth some weapons among the other receiver options on the Patriots team, that could do a lot to help the team.

And if Judge can help the receivers to succeed, it could put him on the map as a potential NFL head coach. At the very least, it will diversify his portfolio. John Harbaugh was the most recent special teams coordinator to be hired as a head coach, and that happened in 2008.
