In September the Patriots acquired wide receiver Josh Gordon from Cleveland for a fifth-round pick, taking a risk on a talented wideout with a troubled history. Today they appear to have lost the gamble, as Gordon stepped away at the most crucial portion of the season with a suspension reportedly hanging over his head.

After violating the NFL's substance abuse policy again, Gordon was suspended for the entire 2015 season.

In 2016, Gordon was reinstated by the NFL and was required to serve a four-game suspension. He then left the Browns to participate in rehabilitation, missing the 2016 season as well.
