Report: Patriots place Edelman on COVID-19 list

Not long after Bill Belichick gave a positive update about Julian Edelman's progress as he attempts to get back on the field, there's news that the Patriots wide receiver has another hurdle to clear.

As first reported by ESPN's Field Yates, the Patriots have placed Edelman on the COVID-19 list.

There's no news whether Edelman tested positive himself or whether he has been in close contact with someone else who has tested positive.

The 34-year-old Edelman, who is still on injured reserve after undergoing a knee procedure in late October, hasn't played a game since Week 7 against the 49ers, when he finished with just one reception for 13 yards.

Just a short time before this latest news broke, Bill Belichick had given an encouraging status report on Edelman during his weekly appearance on WEEI's "Ordway, Merloni & Fauria" Show.

“I know he’s working extremely hard and I would certainly never count Julian out of anything," Belichick said, when asked if he expected Edelman to return this season. "He’s got a tremendous will and work ethic and very competitive. Football is very important to him, so it would take a lot for me to count him out, put it that way.”

Through the first two weeks of the season, Edelman was off to a strong start and racked up a career-high 179 yards on eight catches against the Seahawks, but had just eight catches for 79 yards over the following four games as the Patriots' passing attack sputtered.

Edelman isn't the first Patriot to land on the league's COVID-19 list this season. Cam Newton and Stephon Gilmore were the highest-profile Patriots to miss time earlier this season, and the league reportedly fined the Patriots $350,000 for violating the league's protocols earlier this season.
