Short stay for WR Bennie Fowler with Patriots; he's released

The Patriots revolving door at wide receiver continued Saturday with the release of Bennie Fowler, who had just been signed this week.

With Marcus Cannon's calf injury, the Patriots have moved offensive tackle Cole Croston from the practice squad to fill the roster spot.

And to fill the practice squad vacancy, wide receiver Riley McCarron has been brought back. He was waived on Monday after muffing a punt against the Texans in the season opener.

The move gives the Patriots four active receivers for their game Sunday in Jacksonville (Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson and Corey Coleman, the ex-Bills and Browns wideout signed Tuesday, the same day as Fowler). Special-teamer Matthew Slater is also listed as a wide receiver.
