Stephon Gilmore "can't believe" Jared Goff threw pass Patriots CB intercepted

Stephon Gilmore "can't believe" Jared Goff threw pass Patriots CB intercepted

New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore pretty much sealed his team's Super Bowl LIII win over the Los Angeles Rams with an interception of L.A. quarterback Jared Goff late in the fourth quarter.

Gilmore, speaking to reporters after the Patriots' 13-3 victory, admitted he was surprised Goff even threw the pass.

The interception happened with 4:17 left in the game, and the Patriots drove down the field on the ensuing drive and kicked a field goal to seal the win.

The play was a fitting end to Gilmore's 2018 season. He was named to the NFL's All-Pro team, the Pro Bowl and played better than any other cornerback in the league.

Goff made several mistakes throughout the game, but you have to give Gilmore and the Patriots defense credit. They held the league's second-highest scoring offense without a touchdown in the most important game of the year.

Eli Manning treads lightly in response to Tom Brady's Super Bowl tweet

Eli Manning treads lightly in response to Tom Brady's Super Bowl tweet

Eli Manning knows better than to take pot shots at the GOAT.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady congratulated Manning on his retirement Friday with a playful reference to the two Super Bowls Manning's New York Giants won at the Patriots' expense.

Manning was asked about Brady's tweet Friday at his retirement press conference and how it felt to hand the Patriots legend two of the biggest losses of his career.

Here's his perfectly diplomatic response:

I’ve been around Tom a number of times and see how competitive he is. We joke around a little bit, but I think it's not real funny to him.

Something tells us Eli is right.

Manning did admit New York's Super Bowl wins over New England in the 2007 and 2011 seasons were two of the greatest wins of his career.

"Both of them two-minute drives to go down there and win it, one against an undefeated team (in 2007) that hadn't lost all year," Manning said. "So, I think those are special."

But the longtime Giants quarterback was hesitant to paint those victories as him triumphing over Brady.

"Everybody wants to make it me versus Tom Brady. It's the Giants versus the Patriots," Manning said. "The defense was outstanding, guys made plays. David Tyree, Mario Manningham, Plaxico Burress in the corner of the end zone ... You just cherish those moments."

Brady obviously feels very differently -- he's said on several occasions those two losses will always haunt him -- and Manning knows better than to rub salt in the wound.

Patriots' Tom Brady cracks Super Bowl joke in tweet congratulating Eli Manning on retirement

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has received many congratulatory messages from across the NFL this week after it was announced Wednesday that he's retiring from the NFL.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady became the latest player to chime in Friday morning when he took to Twitter to congratulate Manning on a "great career," and he even got in a Super Bowl joke.

Patriots wide receiver co-signed Brady's comments.

Manning, of course, beat Brady and the Patriots in the Super Bowl on two occasions. The Giants ended the Patriots' undefeated season in 2007 when Manning led a go-ahead touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII. Manning led the Giants to a fourth Lombardi Trophy a couple years later in Super Bowl XLVI with another late touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. He was the only quarterback to beat Brady in a Super Bowl until Nick Foles and the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

Brady did manage to overcome those two difficult losses to the Giants. He's won three Super Bowl titles (in four appearances) and a league MVP since 2014. His six Super Bowl championships overall are the most by any player in league history.

It's admittedly going to be a little weird next season when zero Manning quarterbacks are in the NFL. Eli and his brother, Peyton, had been two of Brady's top rivals since the Patriots quarterback became a starter in 2001. It's truly the end of an era.
