These Pro Football Focus stats show Chase Winovich draft pick value for Patriots

The New England Patriots needed to upgrade their defensive line in the 2019 NFL Draft after the departures of veterans Trey Flowers and Malcom Butler in free agency last month.

Edge rusher was a specific need along the defensive front, and the Patriots drafted a good one in Michigan star Chase Winovich with the 77th overall pick (third round).

The senior defensive end actually was graded higher by Pro Football Focus in 2018 than his teammate Rashan Gary, who went 12th overall in the first round to the Green Bay Packers.

Getting the fourth-ranked edge rusher (per PFF) in the entire draft in the third round is tremendous value for the Patriots.

Winovich excels as a pass rusher and run stopper, illustrating the versatility Patriots head coach Bill Belichick covets.

Winovich tallied 59 total tackles (including 15.5 tackles for loss) with five sacks, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed in 13 games for the Wolverines last season.
