Brady played college football at the University of Michigan for Lloyd Carr. Brady, who also played baseball and basketball at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, had been drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 18th round of the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft.

Brady backed up future NFL quarterback Brian Griese during his first two years for the Wolverines before emerging as starter for his junior and senior seasons, although Drew Henson -- who'd go on to play in both the NFL and MLB -- also received some playing time under center.

The Wolverines won a national championship in 1997, Brady's sophomore season, but he appeared in only four games and attempted 15 passes.

Brady led Michigan to victories in the Citrus Bowl and Orange Bowl, respectively, following the 1998 and 1999 seasons prior to graduation.

Brady finished his career for the Wolverines with a 20-5 record -- 13-3 in the Big Ten -- throwing 30 touchdown passes against 17 interceptions and completing 61.9% of his passes.

In the 2000 NFL Draft, Brady slid to the Patriots in the sixth round. Six quarterbacks were taken ahead of Brady: Chad Pennington, Giovanni Carmazzi, Chris Redman, Tee Martin, Marc Bulger and Spergon Wynn. Pennington won Comeback Player of the Year twice and Bulger made two Pro Bowls, but Brady has made more Pro Bowls (14) than Pennington and Bulger combined had seasons as primary starters at all (13).

The Patriots also drafted six players before they finally got around to taking Brady in Bill Belichick's first year in charge: Adrian Klemm, J.R. Redmond, Greg Randall, Dave Stachelski, Jeff Marriott and Antwan Harris.
