Tom Brady explains why he'd rather be called “trash” than the “GOAT”

Along with hoisting the Lombardi trophy, victory parades, and ring ceremonies, another bastion of Super Bowl pomp and circumstance is the trip to Disney World.

"I'm going to Disney World!," the iconic phrase typically shouted by the Super Bowl MVP, has in recent years also meant an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America.

While Tom Brady was not named the MVP in Super Bowl LIII, he accompanied the actual MVP, Julian Edelman, on the trip, and sat down with Michael Strahan on GMA for an interview.

After winning his record-breaking sixth Super Bowl, Brady is not one to indulge in praise.

Brady said he actually hates it when people refer to him as the "G.O.A.T." or "Greatest Of All Time."

"I don't even like it," Brady said. "It makes me cringe."

After controversially playing up the underdog role in the 2018 postseason, Brady said that he prefers the doubt and criticism, using it as a driving force.

"I wish you would say, 'You're trash, you're too old, you're too slow, you can't get it done no more,'" Brady said. "And I'll say, 'Thank you very much, I'll prove you wrong.'"

It's not news to anyone that Brady still plays with a chip on his shoulder after being drafted as the 199th overall pick in 2000—even after all of these years, Super Bowl wins, and an obscene amount of achievements and NFL records.

While Brady has his fair share of critics, he told Strahan that he is his own toughest critic.

"The personal criticism, I mean I think I'll walk off the practice field and be like ... 'That was the worst day, you know, like get your mind right,'" he said. "Sports have always brought that out in me."

But football is a team game, and after a Super Bowl that featured a truly historic defensive performance by the Patriots, Brady made certain to give credit where it's due.

After throwing an interception on his first pass of the game, Brady remarked at his defense's ability to prevent the Rams from doing much of anything for most of the night.

“Cause, you know, the first drive we throw the interception. It was a terrible throw,” he said. “We're at a opportunity to score to start the game, and it didn't go that way...fortunately our defense just held it down...It was just the ultimate team effort.”
