2022 NFL Draft order: Patriots on track for late first-round pick after Week 12

The countdown to the end of the season has begun, with just six more weeks of the NFL regular season left. With that, the draft order is slowly starting to come into form.

There was not a ton of movement at the top of the draft order from Week 11 to Week 12. The Detroit Lions continue to have a firm hold on that No. 1 pick, as they remain winless after a last-second loss to the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving. The Houston Texans landed back in the No. 2 spot after falling to the New York Jets at home, while the Jacksonville Jaguars sit at No. 3 following their defeat against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Jets currently are in the Nos. 4 and 5 slots. The No. 4 pick comes thanks to the Jamal Adams trade with the Seattle Seahawks in July 2020, while the No. 5 pick is the Jets’ regular selection.

The next two teams on the board also have back-to-back picks. The New York Giants have their own pick at No. 6 and the No. 7 selection from the Bears from April’s draft-day trade that landed the Bears Justin Fields. After that, the Philadelphia Eagles are on the clock at Nos. 8 and 9, with their own pick coming first and then a pick from the Miami Dolphins that came in a 2021 draft-day deal.

The Carolina Panthers round out the top 10 with their own selection.

How is the NFL draft order determined?

Before getting to the draft order, it’s important to understand how it’s determined. Teams are arranged in reverse order of regular-season records (worst to best), with the first 18 picks being made up of non-playoff teams. The ordering of playoff teams is also based on regular-season records, in addition to how far they advanced in the postseason. Pick Nos. 19-24 are teams eliminated in the wild card round, 25-28 are those eliminated in the divisional round, 29-30 are the conference runner-ups, 31 is the Super Bowl loser and 32 is the champion.

Tiebreakers are first settled by strengths of schedules. The team with the easier schedule gets the higher pick. If teams have equal strengths of schedules, then the tie is broken using the following criteria:

  • Divisional or conference tiebreakers
  • Head-to-head
  • Best win-loss-tie percentage in common games (minimum of four games)
  • Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed
  • Best net points in all games
  • Best net touchdowns in all games
  • Coin toss
