Watch Rex Ryan (begrudgingly) relive Patriots-Jets “Butt Fumble”

Where were you for the birth of the Butt Fumble?

Chances are you were glued to your couch after a much-too-big Thanksgiving meal when New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez plowed into the rear end of center Brandon Moore, fumbling the football and allowing New England Patriots safety Stephen Gregory to scoop it up for a touchdown.

But Rex Ryan was on the Jets' sideline during that Nov. 22, 2012 contest -- yes, the Butt Fumble is six years old -- and didn't exactly enjoy the view.

"This a sh---- discussion," the former Jets coach punnily noted in an interview ESPN released Thursday reliving Sanchez's famous gaffe. "Not one of my prouder moments."

Ryan then begrudgingly broke down the play that sparked a 49-19 Patriots rout at the Meadowlands.

"It all went wrong when Sanchez turned the wrong way," Ryan said. "That was the first indication that it was going to be a bad play. But we had no idea it was going to be a disaster play like it turned out."

Ryan hoped Sanchez would just give himself up and accept the lost play. He was sorely mistaken.

"Honest to God, I thought was he going to slide or something," Ryan said of Sanchez. " ... I'm like, 'You've gotta be kidding me.' I think I used different words."

It's a fitting time to bring back the Butt Fumble -- not only is it six years and a day old, but New England and New York also square off this Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The Patriots moved to 7-3 with that win back in 2012, which is their current record as the AFC playoff race heats up.
