Watch Tom Brady convince Bill Belichick to kick late Super Bowl field goal

Of all the fascinating exchanges Showtime's microphones picked up in the Super Bowl LIII, this may be the most interesting.

The New England Patriots had the ball on the Los Angeles Rams' 24-yard line with 1:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. With a 10-3 lead, head coach Bill Belichick faced a crucial decision: go for it on fourth-and-inches to try to end the game right there, or attempt a 41-yard field goal to make it a two-possession game?

Belichick opted for the field goal, which Stephen Gostkowski nailed to seal New England's 13-3 win. But it was quarterback Tom Brady who actually swayed his head coach on the decision.

Check out this fascinating exchange, which aired Tuesday night on Inside The NFL:

"Why don't we just kick the field goal?" Brady tells Belichick. "It's a 40-yarder. The game's over (if Gostkowski makes it)."

Belichick pauses for a beat, then agrees: "Yeah. All right, let's go. Field goal."

What makes this discussing great is that the quarterback often lobbies the coach to go for it on short-yardage situations, wanting to take the ball himself on a QB sneak or at least keep the offense on the field.

But Brady knew the field goal was the right decision: If the Patriots failed to convert, the Rams would have the ball with a chance to tie the game. He also trusted Gostkowski, who missed his first field goal attempt of the game but rallied to drill a 42-yarder in the second quarter.

That trust -- and Belichick's trust in Brady -- is part of the reason why the Patriots are celebrating their sixth Super Bowl title in the last 18 years.
