What excites Cam about Pats' offense? McDaniels will love QB's answer

For the first time in years, we have no idea how the New England Patriots' offense will look this season.

And that's just the way Cam Newton likes it.

There's been plenty of speculation about how offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will game plan around Newton, who comes with a very different skill set than what Tom Brady brought to New England over the last two decades.

Curran: September evaluation will be crucial for Newton, Pats offense

Will McDaniels capitalize on Newton's running ability and install some run-pass options (RPOs)? Will second-year wide receiver N'Keal Harry emerge as Newton's go-to goal-line fade target?

The 31-year-old was asked Friday what he's most excited about in the Patriots' offense -- and his answer should make his offensive coordinator (and head coach Bill Belichick) proud.

"I think the most exciting thing is that nobody knows," Newton said. "And you're still not gonna know. So, you've just got to tune in and see.

"That's what excites me the most. Because everybody's having the same questions, like, 'What are they gonna do? Are they gonna do this, are they gonna do that?' I'm not gonna tell you. Come on. It's almost game week, all right? You can't just let all of the tricks out of the hat."

Unpredictability might be the greatest asset for a Patriots offense that's lacking in talent, especially after Mohamed Sanu's release Thursday.

Adding another layer to the mystery is Newton's health, as even the QB himself doesn't know if his body will hold up over 16 games after missing 16 games over the last two seasons due to shoulder and foot injuries.

"As long as I have legs, I think I'll have the ability to," Newton responded when asked if he could envision himself running the ball 100 times or more this season. "It's just making myself available when needed and asked to do so, and we'll go from there."

What does "go from there" entail? We'll have to wait until Sept. 13 against the Miami Dolphins to find out.
