Why is Danny Amendola wearing No. 12 with Lions? Tom Brady not the reason

OK, so maybe not everything revolves around the New England Patriots.

Former Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola, who signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions in March, showed up to organized team activities last week rocking No. 12.

That led some (mostly Patriots) fans to wonder if his number choice was a nod to Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Amendola's teammate and good friend during a five-year stint in New England.

Amendola shut down that narrative over the weekend, telling ESPN's Mike Reiss:

"Not a story. Sorry!"

So, what is the story behind No. 12, considering Amendola wore No. 20 in college, No. 16 with the then-St. Louis Rams and No. 80 with the Patriots and Miami Dolphins?

Reiss offered a solid theory: Amendola first signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2008, meaning this will mark his 12th NFL season. In other words, to borrow a phrase from Brady, it might be Amendola's way of saying, "We're still here."

The 33-year-old wideout will get to see Brady this summer, as the Patriots will visit Detroit in Week 1 of the preseason. Perhaps the two can swap jerseys.
