2021 MLB Mock Draft: Sox select catcher in FanGraphs' new prediction

Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are one of the most intriguing teams in the 2021 MLB Draft, and they could go in any number of directions with the No. 4 pick in the first round.

The ideal scenario is Vanderbilt ace Jack Leiter falling to the Red Sox. He would be an excellent pickup for the Sox after dominating throughout his Commodores career. Leiter reportedly "very much wants" to play with the Red Sox, according to The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham.

But what if Leiter is gone when the Red Sox are on the clock with the fourth pick in Round 1? The three teams ahead of the Red Sox -- the Pirates at No. 1, the Rangers at No. 2 and Tigers at No. 3 -- all need pitching.

FanGraphs unveiled their new 2021 MLB Mock Draft on Tuesday, and they project Leiter to go second overall to the Rangers.

Who do the Red Sox select? Louisville catcher Henry Davis.

Here is part of FanGraphs analysis of the pick:

"We’re giving them the best player available here, as they recently conducted a private workout with Henry Davis, (Brady) House and Jud Fabian."

Davis batted .370 with 15 home runs, 48 RBI, 45 runs scored, a .482 on-base percentage and a .663 slugging percentage for Louisville during the 2021 season

Targeting a catcher isn't a bad idea for the Red Sox if they can't get Leiter. Only two catchers made's ranking of Boston's top 30 prospects -- Ronaldo Hernandez at No. 11 and Connor Wong at No. 16.

Christian Vazquez is a very good catcher for the Red Sox but he's also 30 years old. Davis could be the team's catcher of the future.
