Betts exits game in 2nd after getting hit by throw

Mookie Betts left the Red Sox game in Texas on Sunday after he flied out to end the top of the second inning. He sustained what the team called a right shoulder contusion after he was struck in the back by a throw as he was running from first base to second in the top of the first.

In an in-game interview with NESN, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he hopes Betts will be able to play when the Red Sox open a key three-game series in New York on Tuesday after a day off Monday.

Betts, who singled to lead off the game and was running to second on a grounder to first, landed awkwardly on his right arm after he was hit, was looked at by trainers but stayed in the game. He was flexing his right arm and shoulder as he went back to the dugout at the end of the second and came out of the game with Blake Swihart entering to play left, Jackie Bradley Jr. moving from center to Betts' spot in right and Andrew Benintendi moving from left to center.

Betts leads the majors in home runs (13) and is the Red Sox' leading hitter at .355 (fifth in MLB). He missed time last week with a hamstring strain.
