Veteran second baseman Brandon Phillips is another step closer to the Red Sox with his promotion on Saturday to Triple-A Pawtucket after a successful six-game stint at Class-A Lowell.
Phillips, 37, the former All-Star and 16-year MLB veteran, went 7-for-22 (.318) with a homer and seven RBI after signing a minor-league deal with Boston on June 27. He hadn't played this season before then after he hit .255 in 24 games with the Angels and .291 in 120 games with the Braves in 2017. He totaled 13 homers and 60 RBI and 11 steals between the two teams.

Phillips posted an Instagram shot of his Lowell Spinners jersey signed by his teammates after getting the news of his promotion.

With the return of Dustin Pedroia uncertain and Eduardo Nunez getting some time at third base for the injured Rafael Devers, Phillips could be a right-handed hitting option at second to pair with left-handed hitting Brock Holt.
