Chris Sale's health situation to become clearer on Tuesday

HOUSTON — There should be some clarity on Chris Sale’s status by Tuesday, when he’s expected to be at Minute Maid Park after staying behind in Boston. Sale was released from the hospital on Monday after he was admitted Sunday with a stomach illness.

Sale pitched four innings Saturday night against the Astros. Sox manager Alex Cora said Sale felt ill only after the outing, not during.

“I think it was probably in the morning, like I want to say two in the morning, three in the morning,” manager Alex Cora said. “That’s what I hear. When I got to the ball park — actually, he texted me, [trainer Brad Pearson] texted me about it. When I got to the ball park they told me he was there. Nothing serious. He was going to go through a battery of tests and see what was going on.

“And thank God it's nothing that is serious at all. Like I said, he'll be here tomorrow, and hopefully physically he's ready to go and we'll decide when he pitches.”

Cora said he’s unsure what the cause of the illness was. Asked if any medicine Sale may be taking was related to the illness, Cora said that was not the case to his knowledge.

Asked if Sale, who’s already quite thin, had lost weight, Cora laughed.

“Hopefully not,” he said.

Sale is the likely pitcher for Game 5, which is on Thursday.
